Daryn Freedman Named Commissioner of Official American Basketball Circuit

The Official American Basketball Circuit is excited to introduce Daryn Freedman as their new Commissioner for their inaugural Season of Spring & Summer 2025. Coach Freedman has more than 30 years of basketball coaching experience at the Professional, College and High School levels.

Frome 2020 through 2024, Coach Freedman served as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Penn State University – Greater Allegheny, where he developed the Program into one of the Top Small College Men’s Basketball Programs in the country. The PSUGA Men’s Basketball Team captured the 2022-23 PSUAC Conference Championship and they were the 2023-24 Conference Regular Season Champion and Tournament Finalist. During the 2023-24 Season, PSUGA Men’s Basketball was ranked at the #1 Small College Men’s Basketball Team in the country for more than half the season. 3 PSUGA Players on the 2023-24 team were named USCAA All-Americans. Overall, in Coach Freedman’s 16 Seasons as a Head Basketball Coach at the College, Prep School and High School levels, Freedman’s teams have captured 12 Conference Championships and close to 300 victories.

Prior to Penn State, Coach Freedman coached at Point Park University (NAIA, now NCAA D2), where he served 2 seasons as Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach and helped guide the Pioneers to 2 straight River States Conference playoff appearances and brought in 2 of the best recruiting classes in school history, which included a number of highly rated high school players and 2 Junior College All-Americans.

Freedman spent close to 10 Seasons as an assistant to Hall of Fame Coach John Calipari at the University of Massachusetts, the Brooklyn/New Jersey Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers and the University of Memphis.

At UMass, Freedman served as a student assistant and practice player for teams that went to the 1994-95 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and 1995-96 NCAA Final Four.

Following his graduation from UMass, Freedman followed Calipari to the Nets where he served as a Coaching Staff assistant and worked in the basketball operations and scouting departments.  Following Calipari’s departure from the Nets, Freedman served as an assistant to Calipari while Calipari was an associate head coach under Larry Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1999-00.  Freedman joined the staff at University of Memphis as Director of Basketball Operations in March of 2000 after Calipari accepted the head coaching position at the school.

At Memphis, Freedman was part of a staff that put together back-to-back national Top 5 recruiting classes.  Among those recruited include NBA players Dajuan Wagner, Amare Stoudamire, Kendrick Perkins, Qyntel Woods, Antonio Burks and Rodney Carney.

Freedman joined Ron Everhart’s staff as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach before the 2005-2006 season. At Northeastern, Freedman helped put together one of the top ranked recruiting classes in the country. Following a 19-win season, led by future NBA player Jose Juan Barea, Coach Everhart and Coach Freedman headed to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh to rebuild the struggling program. At Duquesne, Freedman was recognized as one of the top College Basketball recruiters in the country. Duquesne’s 2006 recruiting class was rated Top 25 Nationally and led by Atlantic 10 Rookie of The Year Robert Mitchell. Freedman also served as the co-Interim Head Coach for Duquesne’s road win over AP Top 25 Boston College during the 2006-07 season.

Over the past 30 years, Freedman has become known around the world for his work developing post players/big men and getting them to the NBA & International Pro Levels. He has been referred to as “The Post Whisperer” and players have come from all over the world, as far as Australia and India, to learn under him. Some of the current and former NBA Players that Freedman has worked with and helped develop include Marcus Camby, Samuel Dalembert, Sim Bhullar, Earl Barron, Stefan Jankovic, Keith Van Horn, Jayson Williams, Chris Gatling, Rony Seikaly, as well as more than 50 International Pro Players.

Freedman has also been a very successful Head Prep School and High School Boys Basketball Coach. He was the head coach at Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, Mass. for four seasons from 2001 through 2005.  While at B&M, Freedman rebuilt a program that captured four-straight league championships and eventually won a New England Prep School Championship in 2004-05.  Administratively, Freedman also served as the President of the New England Prep School Men’s Basketball Coaches Association during his last two years as head coach.

Beginning in 2009, Freedman spent 5 years as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Kiski (Prep) School in Saltsburg, PA, where he established one of the top prep basketball programs nationally. Kiski reached a Top 5 National Ranking in 2 of Freedman’s 5 seasons. Kiski sent 16 players to Division 1 Basketball in Coach Freedman’s 5 seasons and averaged more than 20 wins per season.

In 2014, Coach Freedman was named the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Gateway High School in Monroeville. In his four seasons, Freedman led the Gators to the 4 WPIAL Playoffs appearances in his 4 seasons at the school, as well as a Section Championship in 2016-17. Freedman was also named WPIAL Big 56 Section Coach of The Year for the 2016-17 season.

Freedman also worked for 10 summers as a Head Coach, Clinician and Commissioner at the famed Five-Star Basketball Camp. At Five-Star, Freedman coached a number of future NBA Stars including Lebron James, Chris Paul and Kevin Durant.

In 2019 and 2020, Freedman worked with USA Basketball in training some of their Women’s Olympic hopefuls, including WNBA Players Kelsey Plum, Napheesa Collier and Jackie Young, as well as UConn Star Paige Bueckers.

Freedman graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Sports Management at the University of Massachusetts and a Juris Doctorate Law degree at Seton Hall Law School in New Jersey. Coach Freedman is also the Owner of Freedman Basketball Consulting, which works with Pro and College Teams and Athletic Programs, as well as High School and College Basketball Players, and President of Basketball Stars of America LLC, which is one of the largest and most successful Youth Basketball Skill Development and Tournament Companies in the country. Coach Freedman and his wife Dana reside in Robinson Township with their children Hannah & Max.

The Official American Basketball Circuit will be running 20 Weekends of Tournaments and 1 Day Shootouts from Late February through August in the Pittsburgh/Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia Regions.
